East Meath Councillor Sharon Tolan has put forward an interesting proposal to Meath County Council asking them to consider installing a 2.5 km boardwalk between Bettystown town centre and Mornington.
The idea is one that deserves serious consideration as it would bring many benefits and not involve a huge expense.
Tolan says that such a scheme would have huge benefits for the area in terms of accessibility, biodiversity and overall amenity provision.
These benefits would include a significantly enhanced the ‘beach experience’ for users, providing a dedicated pedestrian walkway from Mornington to Bettystown Town Centre.
This would provide a connection for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users to the proposed Mornington to Drogheda Greenway.
“Completion of this route would improve access, enhancing the natural heritage experience of walkers, providing a permanent hard walking surface of a two-metre wide boardwalk which would successfully facilitate easy access for wheelchair users, pushchairs and the elderly” Councillor Tolan said.
“It would also provide permanent protection of the dune structure which is currently trampled across a number of man-made informal routes.”
