Remembering Pat Donaghey, A Life at the Heart of D Remembering Pat Donaghey, A Life at the Heart of Drogheda Pantomime 🎭

Ahead of the Drogheda Pantomime Society’s opening show next weekend, we remember Pat Donaghey, a much loved and deeply respected member of the DPS for over seven decades.

From the very first pantomime, where she was involved alongside her father Tec Caffrey, to decades spent caring for costumes, performers and generations of families, Pat was part of the very heart of panto in Drogheda.

Her daughter Gillian shared beautiful memories of a woman who lived for her family, the stage and the community around her. A woman who did things her own way, looked after everyone, and whose presence was felt long before the curtain went up.

Pat’s legacy lives on through her family, many of whom continue to be involved in the Society today, and through the countless lives she touched behind the scenes.

Flanagan on Friday: Drogheda, the Port Town That F Flanagan on Friday: Drogheda, the Port Town That Forgot the Sea

Drogheda was once one of Ireland’s most important ports and a key trading partner of Liverpool. Passenger ferries ran three times a week. Ships lined the Boyne as far as St Mary’s Bridge. Merchandise really was our glory. So how did we forget all that?

This week’s Flanagan on Friday reflects on Drogheda’s rich maritime past, what’s been lost along the quays, and why a maritime museum could honour a story that shaped the town we live in today.

From vanished streets and warehouses to forgotten ferry routes and coat-of-arms symbolism, it’s a reminder that Drogheda’s history didn’t start inland. It arrived by sea.
