O’Dowd calls for action from Council on Moneymore gap

Michael O’Dowd of Aontú has called on Louth County Council to take immediate action in relation to the contentious gap between Moneymore and Castle Manor in order that students can safely access the schools on the Ballymakenny Road.

He says that it is absurd that this problem has not yet been dealt with.

“Numerous hours of consultation have taken place over the last four years and yet incredibly we are still talking about it at the commencement of yet another school year” he said.

“I have been inundated by (requests from) parents who are frustrated that this has not been dealt with over the summer.

“The Council has indicated that they will improve the path and install a footbridge, making it safe for children from Moneymore . The alternative is a 40 to 45 minute walk  or additional traffic congestion at the Hospital if parents opt to drive.

“Once that is done it will be possible to look at what safeguards need to be put in place to ensure that the gap does not attract anti-social activities. The schools and parents can also consider a ‘walking bus’ for additional safety for the kids.

“The priority now has to be the children. Its time for the Council to get their finger out and get the work completed. The gap is used by over 300 school children per day and the children in the creche are starting back this week.

“Two weeks ago it was a quagmire after the heavy rain and it will be like that again” he said.
