Major DIFE Expansion Project Cleared to Move to Tender Stage

Fianna Fáil Senator Alison Comyn has warmly welcomed the announcement that the Department of Further and Higher Education has approved the next stage of a significant capital investment project at Drogheda Institute of Further Education (DIFE).

The project, which has now received approval to proceed to tender, forms part of the Further Education and Training Strategic Infrastructure Upgrade Programme (SIUP) and will see the development of a new flexible, multi-purpose tertiary education facility at the Drogheda campus.

The investment will significantly enhance educational opportunities in Drogheda and the wider region, providing additional specialist training spaces for dental nursing and pharmacy technician courses, modern computer facilities, changing rooms, and community-accessible spaces.

Welcoming the announcement, Senator Comyn said:

“This is fantastic news for Drogheda and for the many students, educators and families who rely on DIFE as a pathway to education, skills development and employment opportunities. As someone who is proud to call Drogheda home, I know how important it is that we continue to invest in the future of our town and provide world-class educational facilities for local people.”

Speaking today, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless T.D, said “I am delighted to see this important project proceed to tender and I am looking forward to seeing the construction work commencing on site as soon as possible. This announcement is all about giving regional FET students and staff the world-class facilities they deserve. These new spaces aren’t just buildings, they are inclusive environments meant to inspire students and help them succeed”.

Senator Comyn said the investment demonstrates the Government’s commitment to strengthening further education and training opportunities in regional communities.

“DIFE has long played a vital role in our community, helping people of all ages gain new qualifications, retrain for emerging industries and access rewarding careers. This investment will ensure that the college can continue to grow and meet the needs of students and employers alike.”

The new facility will expand capacity at the college and create modern learning environments designed to support the next generation of skilled professionals across a range of sectors.

Senator Comyn also acknowledged the work undertaken by the Louth and Meath Education and Training Board and all those involved in advancing the project.

“I want to commend the team at Louth and Meath ETB, DIFE, SOLAS and the Department of Further and Higher Education for their dedication in bringing this project to this important milestone. I look forward to seeing the tender process progress and construction begin as soon as possible.”

The development forms part of the Government’s wider commitment to supporting Drogheda’s growth and delivering on the ambitions set out in the Drogheda Implementation Plan, helping to create greater educational, employment and community opportunities for the town and surrounding areas.
