The Louth Water Conservation Order will be lifted this week following increased rainfall and an improvement in the availability of water for public supplies.
Uisce Éireann has confirmed that the current order will expire in Louth at 11.59pm on Wednesday, 26th August.
The restrictions were introduced nationwide on 24th July following a prolonged period of hot and dry weather, high water use and growing pressure on public water supplies.
While conditions have improved in Louth, Uisce Éireann is still encouraging households and businesses to use water carefully as the utility continues to monitor supplies into the autumn.
Public thanked for conserving water
Stephen Burke, Regional Operations Senior Manager for the East region with Uisce Éireann, thanked the public for reducing water use while the restrictions were in place.
“We have received great support from the public for our water conservation appeal, which has seen demand reduce significantly in many areas. The collective efforts of communities to reduce unnecessary water use have made a real difference in protecting our essential supplies.
“The improvement in conditions means we can now lift the Order across many counties. That is a positive outcome and reflects the real difference people and businesses have made by reducing unnecessary water use.
“We are asking customers in these areas to continue to use water wisely. Simple steps such as taking shorter showers, fixing leaks and leaking toilets, running washing machines and dishwashers only when full, and using a watering can instead of a hose can help protect supplies.”
Water supplies will continue to be monitored
Uisce Éireann says it will continue monitoring water sources, demand and the amount of water available for distribution as the country moves into autumn.
Measures to protect public supplies will also continue.
These include repairing leaks, maximising water production, moving water by tanker where necessary and managing the network to reduce the risk of outages.
The decision to end the Louth Water Conservation Order follows several weeks in which households and businesses across the county were asked to reduce non-essential water use.
Drogheda Life reported in July on the extension of the Water Conservation Order across Louth as hot weather, low rainfall and high demand put increasing pressure on supplies.
