In the days of sail and steam

By Community Historian Brendan Matthews

The photo above is from the Drogheda Museum archives, it depicts both a sail and steam ships on the great Boyne River in the early years of the 20th century.

The view, looking up-river towards the Town of Drogheda, also depicts the great Boyne River Viaduct in the background.

The reason why the Viaduct was constructed so high above the Boyne was so that the great tall Ships could sail underneath; the Viaduct being some 90 feet above the high-water mark and which was reflected brilliantly in this image of the older Industrial Town in days gone by.
