Gardaí investigate scrambler incidents in Laytown

Gardaí are investigating reports of a group of teenagers on scrambler bikes causing disruption in East Meath last Sunday.

The group, described as wearing balaclavas, were seen on the beach in Laytown, where they were doing wheelies and approaching people out walking. There were also reports of pedestrians being disturbed on Laytown bridge, with the group remaining in the area for a number of hours.

Under new legislation known as Grace’s Law, it is illegal to drive a scrambler motorbike in a public place.

A number of local residents contacted Gardaí to report the incidents. It is believed up to six teenagers were involved, but most had their faces covered.

The incidents have also led to a strong reaction online, with many people calling for increased Garda presence in the area.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí attended the scene of an alleged incident on Marsh Road, Laytown, Co Meath that occurred shortly before 3pm on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Enquiries are ongoing.”
