The case for a North Drogheda railway station has received a significant boost following the announcement of €377 million in Shared Island funding for cross border infrastructure projects, according to Senator Alison Comyn.
The funding package includes €228 million for rail improvements along the Dublin-Belfast corridor, with investments aimed at increasing capacity, improving journey times, and enhancing services over the coming years.
The announcement of €377 million in Shared Island funding, including major investment in rail infrastructure along the Dublin-Belfast corridor, has significantly strengthened the case for a North Drogheda railway station, according to Senator Alison Comyn.
The funding package includes €193 million to upgrade the Dublin-Belfast-Derry rail line between 2027 and 2030, improving line speed, capacity and journey times, alongside a further €35 million to support the enhanced hourly Enterprise service through to 2030.
Senator Comyn said the investment represents a major boost for communities across the border region and reinforces the strategic importance of the Dublin-Belfast corridor.
“County Louth sits at the heart of one of the most important transport and economic corridors on this island. Every improvement to rail infrastructure along that route strengthens our ability to attract investment, support local businesses, grow tourism and improve connectivity for local communities.”
“The Government is making a substantial investment in the railway line itself. The next step must be ensuring that communities along the route have the infrastructure needed to fully benefit from that investment.”
Senator Comyn said the announcement comes at a critical time for Drogheda, Ireland’s largest town and one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the country.
“Our population continues to grow at a remarkable pace, particularly on the north side of the town. Significant residential development is planned and underway, and it is essential that transport infrastructure keeps pace with that growth.”
“The planned extension of DART + services to Drogheda represents another transformative investment in public transport for the North East. Together with today’s Shared Island funding, it demonstrates a clear commitment to strengthening rail connectivity along the Dublin-Belfast corridor.”
Senator Comyn said a North Drogheda railway station would ensure the benefits of those investments are fully realised.
“A second station would provide direct rail access for thousands of residents, reduce pressure on local roads and parking facilities, encourage greater use of sustainable public transport and support the continued growth of our town.”
“It would also maximise the benefits of the DART extension and future Enterprise upgrades, ensuring that communities across Drogheda can take full advantage of improved rail services.”
The Louth Senator said the investment package sends a positive signal about the future of rail transport and regional development.
“I warmly welcome this funding announcement. It recognises the importance of investing in rail and in the communities that depend on it. As these projects progress, I will continue to advocate strongly for a North Drogheda railway station and the wider infrastructure needed to support our growing population and strengthen Louth’s position at the centre of the Dublin-Belfast corridor.”
