Drogheda Swim Club Enjoys Medal Haul in Pool and Open Water

Drogheda Swim Club enjoyed a hugely successful weekend, with strong performances in both open water and pool competition.

There was a clean sweep for the club on Saturday at the annual Round the Head Swim in Clogherhead, where Drogheda swimmers claimed five medals and took top honours in several categories during the challenging 3km open water event.

The race, expertly organised by Drogheda Triathlon Club, attracted open water swimmers from across the country, but it was Drogheda Swim Club’s own Ethan James who led the field of 70 athletes home in a time of 40.22 minutes.

He was closely followed by senior DSC swimmer Rory Browne, who finished in 43.57 minutes and just pipped club coach Fergal Finn to silver.

Drogheda Swim Club also dominated the girls’ category, with Sophie-Mai Finn taking top spot on the podium and Aimee Rice finishing second. Former club member Tiegen Lennon also swam very well.

Well done to all who took part.

Drogheda Triathlon Club will also host the Boyne Swim over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and organisers are hopeful it will encourage even more club swimmers to get involved in open water events.

The curtain came down on the regular gala season on Sunday with the Aer Lingus SC Level 1 Gala in Sportslink, where 27 young Drogheda Swim Club swimmers competed against swimmers from other Leinster clubs.

There were 14 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze medals, along with 31 new personal bests and 11 events tried for the first time from 92 individual swims.

The young swimmers competed strongly against athletes from Aer Lingus SC, Coolmine SC, Curragh SC, Crumlin SC and Swan SC.

The club also extended huge thanks to the parents who volunteered to provide backroom support and made sure no swimmer missed their race.

Drogheda Swim Club is now looking forward to seeing all of these swimmers back in action in October for the new gala season.

In July, several club members will travel to Kilkenny to represent Louth in swimming at the National Community Games, and the club wishes them all the best.
