FitLine (1800 303 545), a free nationwide telephone service run by Age & Opportunity, is encouraging older people to become more active and take the first steps towards a healthier lifestyle.
The service is open to people aged 50 and over and provides support from trained volunteer mentors who offer encouragement, practical advice and information on local clubs and facilities.
Last year, FitLine volunteers made 1,495 calls to older people across Ireland, helping them explore and maintain ways of staying physically active.
Meg Hegarty, Active Programme FitLine Coordinator at Age & Opportunity, said: “We’re encouraging older people who are looking to get more active to contact the FitLine service. Our mentors call participants regularly to encourage and support them on their active journey. This is a free telephone-based initiative which provides practical, tailored information alongside encouragement to suit an individual’s circumstances.”
FitLine is open to people aged 50 and over, with no upper age limit. Support is provided through regular telephone calls with a dedicated mentor, as well as printed leaflets containing simple exercises that can be done at home.
Mentors can also help participants connect with local groups and facilities if they wish to become involved in activities within their community.
