Major progress on Drogheda Northern Cross Route

The second phase of the Port Access Northern Cross Route from the Termonfeckin Road to the railway line north of Aston Village is expected to be substantially completed by the end of this year.

An update on the major infrastructure project was given at this week’s meeting of Louth County Council, where councillors heard that work on the new route is progressing well, with much of the foundation work already completed.

Attention is now turning towards Phase 3 of the project, which will involve the construction of a railway underpass linking the North Road with the Termonfeckin Road section of the route.

Louth County Council has submitted an application to the Department of Housing seeking €23.9 million in funding for the next phase. The council has already secured €350,000 to progress detailed design plans for the underpass.

Welcoming the progress, Cllr James Byrne said the project was continuing to move forward.

“Phase two from the Termonfeckin Road to north of Aston Village is underway and according to Louth County Council will be substantially completed by the end of the year,” he said.

He also confirmed that the Department is currently reviewing the council’s funding application for the railway underpass.

“So fingers crossed we will receive good news in the near future,” he added.

Cllr Byrne also welcomed the recent completion of works at Pitcher Hill Steps between James Street and Duleek Street, a busy pedestrian route used by many residents in the Duleek Gate area travelling to and from the town centre.

“Really glad to see the scaffolding and materials completely removed from James Street and Pitcher Hill steps. They were obviously there for health and safety reasons but definitely overstayed their welcome. Good to see both areas scrubbed following removal.

“I am still waiting patiently for the Council to come up with a plan for resurfacing the steps. I am hopeful. Compliments must go to those responsible for the lovely planting on the steps.”
