Cllr Sharon Tolan has warmly welcomed the Grant of Planning Permission for the redevelopment of the long‑vacant and unfinished apartment block at Bettystown, describing the decision as a “hugely significant and long‑overdue milestone” for the local community.
The site, which has remained unfinished for almost two decades, has been a persistent eyesore and source of frustration for residents of Bettystown and the wider Laytown–Bettystown area.
“After almost 20 years, seeing this site finally reach the point of having planning permission granted is enormously important for the community,” said Cllr Tolan. “This derelict structure has been a blight on Bettystown for far too long, and this decision now opens the door to its regeneration and transformation into something positive.”
The permitted development will provide much‑needed residential apartments along with a creche facility, all within a prime, well‑serviced and sustainable location close to schools, shops, transport links and community amenities.
Cllr Tolan noted that her submission was the only submission received in respect of the application, highlighting the broad local understanding of the need to see the site brought back into productive use.
“The absence of objections reflects the reality on the ground, people want to see this site completed properly, safely, and to a high standard. There is a strong appetite locally for regeneration, housing delivery and improved amenity.”
Importantly, the Grant of Planning Permission includes a number of robust and detailed conditions, ensuring that the development will be delivered to a high standard and with appropriate regard for residential amenity, design quality, traffic management, and supporting infrastructure, including childcare provision.
“These conditions are vital. They ensure that what is delivered enhances the area, integrates properly with the existing community and meets modern planning and design standards.”
Cllr Tolan emphasised that the decision aligns with both local and national planning policy, which prioritise compact growth, brownfield regeneration and the efficient use of serviced land within existing urban areas.
“This is exactly the kind of development we should be supporting, regenerating long‑derelict sites, delivering homes where services already exist, and improving the overall quality of our towns and villages.”
Concluding, Cllr Tolan said:
“This is a genuinely positive outcome for Bettystown and the wider Laytown–Bettystown area. It shows what persistence can achieve and marks an important step towards finally addressing a long‑standing planning legacy issue.”
