Food and wine event SommiT Ireland to take place across Drogheda this May

A three day food and wine event is set to take place across Drogheda this May, with organisers bringing SommiT Ireland to the town for the first time.

Running from May 10th to 12th, the event will be held in a number of local venues including The Barbican Theatre, St Peter’s Parish Centre and Scholars Townhouse, along with other locations around Drogheda.

SommiT, which first launched in Waterford in 2022, focuses on food, wine and the wider hospitality sector. It brings together chefs, sommeliers, producers and others working in the industry, alongside members of the public with an interest in food and drink.

The decision to move the event to Drogheda places a focus on the Boyne Valley and its food offering, as well as the area’s growing connection to wine production. County Louth is now home to what organisers describe as the largest planting of wine grapes on the island.

Mix of talks, tastings and workshops

This year’s programme includes panel discussions, tastings and a number of interactive sessions across the three days.

Among them is “the ZING! Thing,” a food and wine workshop developed in the United States and accredited by the American Culinary Federation, along with a series of themed tastings and industry discussions.

Events will take place in different locations across the town, something organisers say is intended to encourage people to explore Drogheda during the festival.

Open to both the public and industry

Two types of tickets are available for the event. A public “Enthusiast Day” will take place on Sunday, May 10th at The Barbican Theatre, with tickets priced at €20. This will give attendees a chance to meet producers and take part in tastings.

A separate professional programme will run across all three days, aimed at those working in hospitality and related industries.

Patricia Rogers, co-ordinator of SommiT, said the move to Drogheda is an opportunity to showcase the area. “SommiT events will take place across several locations in Drogheda, we hope this will encourage exploration of more of the town’s offerings. The whole Boyne Valley is an unfolding treasure; we’re thrilled to be here,” she said.
