A 16 week scoping probe into the paedophile activities of disgraced doctor Michael Shine is likely to go ahead.
The approval is expected to be given at a Cabinet meeting tomorrow Wednesday and it is being proposed by the Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeil.
There are currently 387 victims who say they were molested by the medic either at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda or his private rooms in Fair Street.
The incidents occurred from the 1970s through to the mid 1990s when he was forced to retire because of the complaints against him.
His victims are demanding a full State Investigation into the doctor’s decades of abuse.
The Minister is expected to appoint a senior counsel to oversee the scoping enquiry before Christmas.
Government insiders say her proposal will be supported by her cabinet colleagues.
It is expected that Ministers will initially agree to a 16 weeks scoping enquiry led by a senior counsel who will be appointed before Christmas.
Shine,93, has already served three years in jail for abusing nine young boys.
But no criminal proceedings have been taken in the vast majority of the complaints made against and his victims say they have not received justice. So far over 200 victims have settled compensation claims with the Lourdes Hospital.
However another 20 new such cases are expected before the High Court over the next year.
