Water outage planned for Friday night to facilitate pipeline repairs

Uisce Éireann is warning the public in Drogheda and surrounding areas to expect water outages this Friday and Saturday to facilitate essential repair works to a section of pipeline that is likely to burst if not fixed.

They say that a burst on this pipeline would result in unplanned and widespread water outages impacting the community in Drogheda and possibly other areas such as Baltray, Termonfeckin and Clogherhead.

Work will commence on Thursday 29 August but there will be no interruption to supply until Friday night 30 August at 10:30pm when water in the pipeline is switched off.

Due to the size of this pipeline and complexity of the works, specialist teams will work through the night to complete the repair and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible on Saturday 31 August. Project updates will be provided as works progress.

Stephen Burke of Uisce Éireann, said: “… This is a complex and challenging project due to the size, and location of the pipe. Extensive preparation has taken place in advance to enable us to carry out these works and minimise impact on water supplies including the provision of water tankers.

“Our dedicated teams are in the process of contacting vulnerable customers and other stakeholders that will be impacted by this critical repair. The works are taking place over the weekend and at night to reduce the impact that this will have on schools, hospitals and businesses across Drogheda”.

Traffic management will be in place along a portion of the carriageway of the Drogheda Retail Park Roundabout and along a section of the L-1003 to the turn for the Newgrange Business Park from Thursday 29 August until Sunday 1 September. Local and emergency traffic access will be maintained.

Alternative water supplies will be available from tankers at the following locations in Drogheda:

  • O Raghallaigh GFC A92FDK6
  • Newtown Blues GFC A92TY82
  • Dalys Centra (AKA Johns Shop) A92K759
  • The Black Bull Inn A92EPH2

Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and, as a precaution, boil the water before drinking.

As per best practice, most homes and businesses will have on-site water storage to provide a backup source of water for sanitation purposes. Uisce Éireann advises customers to familiarise themselves with their storage capacity.

Before and during the planned disruption to supply, Uisce Éireann advises customers in the affected area to:

  • Ensure you have enough drinking water: Before the planned disruption, fill a jug of water and store it in your fridge. Don’t drink the water from your hot water or bathroom taps as this is not drinking water.
  • Turn off all pre-programmed appliances: All pre-programmed appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines or any other water-using devices should be switched off during the planned supply disruptions.
  • Make sure all taps in your property are turned off:  This is important as it can avoid airlocks or flooding when the water returns.
  • Use the water sparingly
  • Most storage tanks last up to 24 hours but emptying the tank may cause an airlock.

Following this type of work, occasionally issues such as cloudy water (air bubbles) or internal airlocks may arise. For advice on how to resolve these issues, please visit www.water.ie/help/supply/after-an-outage/
