Bellewstown’s Robert Whearty continued his fine run of form this week, claiming victory at Bellewstown with Ukiyo for trainer Gavin Cromwell and the First Law Syndicate. The pair took the six-furlong handicap in impressive style, holding off Sovereign Banter by a length and a quarter — Whearty’s 21st win of the season so far.
Elsewhere, the battle for the national jockeys’ title remains fierce, with reigning champion Colin Keane and Donegal’s Dylan Browne McMonagle matching each other early in the week before McMonagle surged ahead. Wins at Cork and a superb treble at Bellewstown extended his lead to eight heading into the weekend.
At Bellewstown’s Wednesday meeting, Meath trainer Michael Mulvany scored a notable double with Ribee and Duke Of Leggagh, while Kieran Cotter’s Arklow Lad impressed under Declan McDonogh in the five-furlong maiden.
It was also a productive week for local stables elsewhere, with John McConnell’s Walks The Talk and Rexem both winning under Alex Harvey, while Cromwell’s Court Canyon also struck at Clonmel.
Gordon Elliott’s powerful yard continued its hot streak, registering multiple victories across Gowran Park, Sligo, and Killarney — including Western Fold’s commanding Grade 2 PWC Champion Chase win under Danny Gilligan.
The season now enters its final stretch, with the title battle between Keane and Browne McMonagle and the continued form of local riders like Whearty promising a thrilling finish.
