Gardaí are investigating after two teenagers allegedly stole a hearse from a funeral home in Co Louth before taking it on a late-night drive.
The vehicle was stopped by Gardaí in the Dunleer area at around 2.45am on Sunday after it was observed being driven in a dangerous manner.
The hearse had reportedly been taken from Tenanty’s Funeral Home in Ardee earlier that night after the premises was broken into.
It is not believed that the hearse was carrying a body when Gardaí recovered it.
The two youths were arrested after Gardaí intercepted the hearse several miles from where it had been stolen.
A Garda source described the incident as bizarre, questioning how anyone could expect to drive a hearse around the county without attracting attention.
One of the juveniles has since been released without charge and will be referred to the Garda National Youth Diversion Programme.
The second teenager remained in Garda custody on Sunday night.
Gardaí have not disclosed the ages of those involved, and investigations into the incident are continuing.
