Opera and mythology came together in Drogheda over the weekend as Drogheda Classical Music presented A Spotlight on Irish Opera – The Making of The Morrigan at the Droichead Arts Centre on Saturday, 25 October.
The event, held in partnership with the Lú Festival of Light, offered audiences a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to write an opera from first idea to final performance.
Composer John O’Brien and librettist Éadaoin O’Donoghue, creators of The Morrigan (2022), joined Dr Gavan Ring, Tenor and Artistic Director of Drogheda Classical Music, for an engaging “In Conversation” exploring the inspiration, aspiration and perspiration involved in bringing one of Irish mythology’s most powerful legends to the stage.
The evening also featured live performances of excerpts from The Morrigan, performed by Gavan Ring and acclaimed soprano Nicola Ring, to the delight of the audience.
Supported by Love Drogheda, the special event built on the success of last year’s collaboration between Drogheda Classical Music and the Lú Festival, continuing Drogheda’s growing reputation as a centre for creative arts and performance.
