Drogheda United captain Ryan Brennan announces retirement from football

Ryan Brennan retirement has been confirmed, with the Drogheda United captain set to call time on his playing career at the end of the 2026 season.

The hometown player has made 276 appearances for the club across eight seasons to date, scoring 33 goals.

One of the defining moments of his Drogheda United career came in 2024, when he captained the club to FAI Cup Final victory over Derry City.

He went on to retain the captaincy for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

A family connection with Drogheda United

The Brennan family has had a long association with Drogheda United since Ryan made his first-team debut in 2010.

Ryan and his three brothers, Gavin, Sean and Killian, have all worn the claret and blue of their hometown club.

Ryan was also recognised with a Drogheda & District Chamber/Flogas Ireland Sporting Hero award.

At the time, Chamber CEO Hubert Murphy praised his leadership and commitment.

As a captain and leader, there’s not many better than Ryan out there, and that makes him a perfect choice for the latest Drogheda & District Chamber/Flogas Ireland ‘Sporting Hero’ award, he said.

These awards recognise spirit and determination in equal measure, and Ryan ticks all the boxes when it comes to commitment.

Drogheda United manager Kevin Doherty paid tribute to his captain following the announcement.

“Since the first day I met Ryan, he’s been a pleasure to work with. He’s a fantastic footballer and has been integral to the success we’ve had over the last five seasons.

“He has shown the impact of having a local player in the team, with the connection he has to the club and town and then captaining us over the last two seasons.

“To see him get to lift the FAI Cup for his hometown club will always be the highlight. Ryan has had an incredible career, one that he should be proud of.

“I wish him and his family the very best and look forward to seeing him back here as a supporter.”

Drogheda United also thanked Ryan on behalf of the club’s staff, coaches, teammates, volunteers and supporters.
