Rainbow flag raised over council offices for Pride Month

As of midday yesterday, the rainbow flag is once again flying over the Council offices in Fair Street, Drogheda. The flag is raised each year in June for Pride Month which culminates in the Drogheda Pride Festival.

Peter Nugent, the founder of the Drogheda LGBTQ+ group and one of the main organisers of the Drogheda Pride Festival said that the Pride festival, which takes place from 19th to 23rd July, helps to promote Drogheda in its transition to become Ireland’s next city.

“We’re hoping to promote the very best of awareness inclusion and most importantly diversity within the Drogheda community” he told Drogheda Life.

“This year support has been exceptional and we are trying to get as many people as possible involved once again this year to highlight the importance of LGBT in the community.

We have four days of events including workshops, family fun events and of course the parade which is always a very enjoyable day for everyone.

Asked about a recent spate of homophobic attacks, both physical and on social media against the group, Peter said it was still happening.

“But” he added, “we are stronger people this year, we have a lot more support than ever before and we are well equipped to deal with these people.

“It is really important that the Pride team and the people who support us understand that we are very strong people in the community and we are leading the way in the campaign for LGBT rights.”
