Labour TD Ged Nash has said that Eir want to replace redundant phone boxes in Drogheda and across Louth with charging points for electric vehicles, but they cannot get Louth County Council’s agreement to do so.
“This requires an explanation from Louth County Council” Deputy Nash said. “I contacted Eir again in recent weeks to ask them to remove the eyesores on Laurence’s Street and elsewhere.
“They responded by saying they have been in communication with Louth County Council but no agreement to install chargers was reached.
“In contrast, Eir informed me that seven charging points are currently being installed in Carlow with the support of the Council there and at absolutely no cost to the local authority under an agreement Eir has with a firm called Easy Go.
“This is part of a national programme to replace redundant phone boxes with charging points.
“These legacy phone boxes are a blight on a town struggling with dereliction and high-levels of commercial and residential vacancy rates. The Council should engage with Eir to resolve any issues that have arisen.
“There is both an environmental and regeneration imperative to do so.”
