Motorists warned to take care as flooding hits parts of Drogheda

Motorists in the Drogheda area have been warned to be extremely careful about flooding caused by high tides.

Wellington Quay, the North and Merchants Quays plus Ship Street and the Marsh- Mornington Roads are among the areas which have been badly affected.

The warning came from local councillors after two motorists had to be rescued in the early hours of yesterday morning by the Boyne Fishermen Rescue and Recovery Service.

The BFRRS said:” At 0.20am on November 6 our crew responded to assist with two cars after entering flood waters on the Marsh Road, Drogheda.

” On arrival Louth County Fire and Rescue service extracted the person safely from the car while Gardai closed the road to provide further safety to crews responding and to stop any further vehicles getting caught in the floodplain.

” Our crews safely assisted with the recovery of the cars from the flooded area and once complete returned to the boathouse.”

Cllr Debbie McCole urged people to be extremely careful with the high tides and the next ones are due at midday Friday and 12.30am Saturday.

She said:” Thursday’s high tide caused flooding in parts of Drogheda with some cars unfortunately getting stuck. A huge thank you to Louth Fire Service for their quick response and fast action helping people get safely to dry ground. A massive thank you also to the Boyne Fishermen Rescue and Recovery Service.”

Cllr McCole said the areas to avoid during high tide are Wellington Quay, Marsh Road, Baltray Road and low lying roads or pathways around the river Boyne.

She added:” Please take extra care if you’re out and about near the river and avoid driving through flooded roads. Stay safe everyone.”
