The launch of Iarnród Éireann’s FourNorth project has been welcomed as a major step towards more frequent and reliable rail services for commuters in County Meath.
FourNorth is a proposed upgrade to the Northern Line between Dublin Connolly and Malahide, where additional tracks would help ease a major rail bottleneck.
The extra capacity would allow faster and stopping services to use separate tracks, supporting more frequent and reliable trains while giving the network greater flexibility during disruptions and as passenger demand grows.
Government Minister and Meath East TD Thomas Byrne has welcomed the launch of Iarnród Éireann’s FourNorth project, describing it as another significant investment in rail that will directly benefit commuters and communities across County Meath.
The project will increase rail capacity between Dublin Connolly and Malahide, allowing more frequent and reliable services on the Northern Line. This will benefit passengers using Gormanston, Laytown and Drogheda MacBride stations, including the many commuters living on the Meath side of Drogheda.

“This is very welcome news for County Meath. Thousands of people rely on rail services every day, and this investment will help deliver more reliable, more frequent trains for commuters travelling to and from Dublin.
“Alongside DART+ to Drogheda, FourNorth demonstrates the Government’s commitment to delivering the modern rail network our growing communities deserve.”
Minister Byrne added that investing in rail is essential to supporting Meath’s growing population, reducing road congestion and providing sustainable public transport for the future.
