McGinty calls for safety signage at accident blackspots

23 road traffic casualty collisions on stretch of Carranstown Road between 2016 to 2023

Four road traffic casualty collisions on stretch of Beamore Road, Drogheda in same time period

Labour Councillor Elaine McGinty has called for the introduction of safety signage in accident blackspots on local roads, especially on the Carranstown Road where 23 road traffic collisions occurred  between 2016 and 2023 and on the Beamore Road  where four accidents happened in the same time period.

“As road traffic incidents continue to rise nationwide, it’s time to take practical measures to urge caution on our roads” Cllr McGinty said. “I’m calling for safety signage to be placed in particular accident blackspots.

“The RSA tell us that killer behaviours on our roads include being distracted by phones and speed. By placing signage on particularly dangerous stretches of roads, we can remind drivers to slow down and to remain focused on the road.

“While not a panacea, it could go a long way to encourage more awareness of road safety for people in Meath and Louth.

“2024 has been a very dark year on our roads nationwide with 69 lives lost on our roads. There’s hardly a community that has not felt the grief and trauma of losing someone to a road traffic incident.

“The RSA does not publish data on collisions, but I reiterate Labour’s call on the organisation to do so. Road users need the full information so they can take every step to ensure their safety on the roads.”
