Gardai in Louth have warned parents not to let their children use electric scooters for both their own safety and also to protect other road users.
They issued the public plea after an eight year old child was caught doing speeds of up to 30 kph by the roads policing unit in Dundalk.
The officers couldn’t believe it when they stopped and questioned the child and discovered the youngster was eight. The E scooter was seized and the child’s parents spoken to.
Louth Gardai said: We don’t want to be seen as killjoys, but we can not sit back and watch people, especially kids, be put in harm’s way.
E scooters that comply with regulations should only be used by persons over 16 and we would encourage users to wear appropriate safety gear and ensure lights are working.
