Explore the Famous Santa María on a Unique Maritime Experience.

A full-scale replica of the Santa María, the flagship of Christopher Columbus’ historic 1492 voyage across the Atlantic, is set to arrive in Drogheda, where it will be open to the public from July 17 to July 26.

The impressive vessel offers visitors a unique opportunity to step aboard one of history’s most famous ships and experience what life was like for the sailors who took part in one of the world’s most significant voyages of exploration.

The original Santa María was the largest of the three ships that made up Columbus’ expedition, alongside the Niña and the Pinta. On August 3, 1492, the fleet sailed from the Spanish port of Palos de la Frontera with a crew of around 90 men, embarking on a journey that would forever change the course of world history.

The Santa María served as the expedition’s flagship, carrying Columbus across the Atlantic until the fleet reached the Americas on October 12, 1492, after 33 days at sea. The voyage marked the first recorded European expedition to reach the Americas and remains one of the most influential events in maritime history.

The original vessel’s story ended later that year when it ran aground off the island of Hispaniola, present-day Haiti, on Christmas Day. Timber from the wreck was used to construct La Navidad, recognised as the first Spanish settlement in the Americas.

The replica now visiting Drogheda was built by Spain’s Nao Victoria Foundation between 2017 and 2018. Its construction involved almost 100 specialists, including shipbuilders, historians, engineers and traditional maritime craftspeople, all working to recreate the ship as accurately as possible using historical records.

The vessel measures more than 28 metres in length, has three towering masts rising almost 25 metres above the water and carries five sails covering more than 300 square metres. While remaining faithful to the design of the original, the replica also incorporates modern navigation equipment and safety systems to comply with current maritime regulations.

Below deck, visitors can explore exhibition spaces explaining the history of the Santa María, the challenges faced by 15th-century sailors and the remarkable voyage that reshaped the world. The floating museum provides an insight into navigation, daily life at sea and the ship’s enduring place in history.

The Santa María will be berthed in Drogheda with its decks open to visitors from July 17 through to July 26, giving people of all ages the chance to experience this remarkable piece of living maritime history.
