€1 Million Funding Secured for Eastham Road Cycling and Pedestrian Scheme in Bettystown

Funding of €1,000,000 has been welcomed for the Eastham Road Cycling and Pedestrian Scheme in Bettystown, Co Meath, which is expected to deliver major improvements in road safety, accessibility and quality of life for residents in East Meath.

Fine Gael Councillor Sharon Tolan described the allocation as a significant investment that will support the development of dedicated cycling and pedestrian infrastructure along Eastham Road, one of the area’s key routes. The scheme will provide safer connectivity between Donacarney and Bettystown and improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

Welcoming the announcement, Councillor Tolan said the funding would make a real difference to the local community.

“This €1 million investment is fantastic news for East Meath. Eastham Road is a busy and important route, and this scheme will greatly improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, families and commuters who use it every day. It is about creating safer streets and giving people real, sustainable travel options,” she said.

Councillor Tolan noted that the project aligns with both local and national objectives to promote active travel, reduce traffic congestion and support healthier communities.

She added that she was particularly pleased to see funding allocated to infrastructure that benefits people of all ages.

“Investment like this shows a clear commitment to active travel and to building communities that are safer, healthier and more connected. I am especially delighted that this project includes vital safety features and public lighting at Bettystown Cross, which I have highlighted as a dangerous location for a number of years,” she said.

The Eastham Road Cycling and Pedestrian Scheme is expected to enhance connectivity between residential areas and local amenities, while also supporting climate action goals by encouraging walking and cycling and reducing reliance on private car use.

“I am looking forward to seeing this vital project move to tender and construction stage later this year,” Councillor Tolan added.
