Irish Water and Louth County Council have completed repair work on a burst watermain which has affected the supply in Drogheda since early on Monday morning.
Hundreds of households and over 70 hospitality businesses in Drogheda town and others further afield were left without water for over 24 hours after one of the main water trunks into the town burst.
The areas affected by the initial burst included Ballsgrove Estate, Donore Industrial Estate, Trinity Street, Patrick Street, Lourdes, Drogheda Town North, Chord Road, Cross Lane, Ballymakenny Road, Sandyford, North Quay, Termonfeckin, Clogherhead, Termonabbey, Newfoundwell Road, Ballymakenny Road and surrounding areas.
In addition the supply to Drogheda Town South and surrounding areas was shut off temporarily to facilitate the repairs.
Repairs have been underway since early on Monday morning and continued through the night and were completed at approximately 11:30am this morning.
Whilst supply will have returned to many properties already, it is expected that normal water supply will have returned to all customers by 8pm tonight.
The repair was complex given the difficult ground conditions and the presence of multiple other services. Irish Water prioritised water supply to the Lady of Lourdes hospital. Irish Water and Louth County Council have mobilized alternative water supplies that will be available until later tonight at the following locations;
- Brookeville Estate, Ballymakenny Road
- Johns Shop ‘Centra’, Platin Road
Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tankers or IBCs and to boil the water before consumption as a precautionary measure.
Customers should follow HSE and government COVID-19 advice in relation to social distancing when collecting water from tankers.
