Drogheda United aim to bounce back as they face St Patrick’s Athletic

The Boynesiders haven’t played since a 3-2 defeat at home to Galway United on Monday, April 6, after last Friday’s game against Waterford was postponed due to an unplayable pitch in the RSC.

In that game against Galway, Kevin Doherty’s side took the lead early as Mark Doyle reacted quickest in the box three minutes in to finish from close range from a Brandon Kavanagh corner.

Drogheda doubled the lead fifteen minutes later from another corner as Conor Keeley rose highest to meet Kavanagh’s delivery. His header hit the post before Jago Godden scored from the follow up effort from close range.

Galway were back in the game minutes later as Francely Lomboto found the bottom corner from 20 yards out. The hour mark then saw the introduction of Kris Twardek and Axel Piesold for the visitors, with both players having an impact on the outcome of the game.

Twardek scored immediately after his introduction to level the game, before Piesold slotted the ball into the bottom corner on 69 minutes to earn John Caulfield’s men the three points.

When Drogheda faced St. Patrick’s Athletic earlier this season, Thomas Oluwa’s early strike gave Drogheda a half time lead. However, a clinical second half performance from Stephen Kenny’s side saw the Saints win 4-1.

In team news, Scott Brady, Owen Lambe and Ethan O’Brien are sidelined due to injury.

Pre-Match Quotes – Kevin Doherty

“Owen and Scott have been out for a while, and Ethan O’Brien now has a medium-term injury and will be out for a few weeks. Every team picks up injuries, but it’s all part of it and that’s why we have a squad. I’m more than confident that with the squad we have, that we can give a really good account of ourselves.

“We have prepared well for tomorrow. Pats, I know they have lost a couple, but they have been in great form. You can see from their points total and league position how good they have been. But we know we can be a match for anybody on our day, and we have to make sure tomorrow is one of those days.
