Drogheda to shine as proud host of National Services Day 2024

Drogheda will once again take centre stage as it proudly hosts National Services Day 2024 on Saturday, September 14th, building on the overwhelming success of last year’s ground breaking event.

This vibrant celebration, which drew hundreds to the streets of Drogheda, honours the dedicated emergency and security services that safeguard our communities day in and day out.

“These are our local heroes—volunteers who selflessly give their time and often risk their lives to protect others,” said Gavan Duff, Chairperson of National Services Day and Unit Officer with the Irish Red Cross in Drogheda.

“What began as a local Drogheda/Louth event has now blossomed into a major North East celebration, with participation from services in Meath, Cavan, and Monaghan. Our organising committee has expanded to include representatives from a wide array of local services, and their dedication has been truly inspiring.

“This year’s parade will once again march through Drogheda, featuring the sirens of emergency vehicles and the rousing music of the Drogheda and Lourdes Brass Band, alongside the Clontibret and Carlingford Pipe Bands.

“Drogheda BIDs will provide family entertainment throughout the day, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Our National Service Day Village returns to Drogheda Port, giving the public an up-close look at our local heroes, live demonstrations, and emergency vehicles. New this year is an entertainment zone at Scotch Hall, featuring a funfair and live music to enhance the festivities.”

Nichola Kelly, Manager of Scotch Hall, said: “We’re thrilled to co-host the National Services Day Festival at Scotch Hall with Drogheda Port Company. This event is a dynamic celebration of the incredible service providers who tirelessly support our community.

The festival kicks off after the parade at 1.00 pm and continues throughout the day. For full details, visit our social media channels or www.scotchhall.ie ”

Cllr. Declan Power, a member of the organising committee, emphasised the significance of the event: “This year’s celebration promises an extraordinary festival atmosphere with something for everyone. It’s a powerful opportunity to unite as a community and express our heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to all the frontline, emergency, and security staff who perform remarkable work every day. As a Louth County Councillor from Clogherhead, I’m particularly proud that the RNLI, celebrating their 125th anniversary, will lead the parade through Drogheda.”

Vice Chairperson and a volunteer with the Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue, Jay Clarke added, “National Services Day is an outstanding platform to showcase the vital role of our local services and ensure the community knows where to turn for help when needed.”

Drogheda Port Company is supporting National Services Day by providing the perfect venue for this year’s display village. “The Port will also feature some of its own machinery on the day, offering a unique perspective on the incredible work of our National Services teams,” said Drogheda Harbour Master Captain Laurence Kirwan. “We look forward to a fantastic day.”

Ireland’s frontline, emergency, and security personnel work tirelessly to protect the public, often under the most challenging conditions. National Services Day offers a unique opportunity for these professionals to connect with the community and express their gratitude for the unwavering public support.

“We want to see as many people from Drogheda and the surrounding district come out in their droves to support this great day of celebration, a celebration of local heroes,” concluded Gavan Duff.
