Drogheda road repair programme set for earlier start this summer

Drogheda’s annual summer road repair programme could begin earlier than usual this year.

The works typically take place in July and August, often overlapping with the return to school and leading to increased traffic disruption. However, officials at this week’s Drogheda and District Municipal Council meeting indicated that the programme may get underway sooner in an effort to speed up delivery.

Councillor James Byrne welcomed the update, saying it would help reduce the impact on traffic later in the summer.

He said: “We were informed that the road works programme could start by the end of May or early June. This is very welcome news and an issue I have been very vocal on.

“Every year funding is allocated and roads are approved for works around February/March. Work, however, doesn’t typically start until July or August. Such works often clash with the return to school and inevitably result in traffic chaos in places.

“The length of time it takes to get contractors on the ground resurfacing entire stretches of road has taken too long in the past for all sorts of reasons.

“I asked the Council to streamline the tendering process where possible to ensure the works commence in the quieter summer months. Fair play to Louth County Council on this great work. I appreciate the process and any delays are not always within their control but appreciate the improvements made.”
