Deirdre Gogarty statue campaign gets €5,000 kick-start

The campaign to erect a statue in honour of a Drogheda woman Deirdre Gogarty who blazed a trail for women’s boxing and eventually became world champion, has got off to a flying start thanks to the generosity of local business man Brian Browning.

“We would like to thank Brian Browning of Gleeson’s Pub for kick-starting our statue fundraising campaign with a donation of €5,000 said the Deirdre Gogarty Legacy Committee chairperson Ciaran McIvor.

“Brian has been incredibly supportive of our cause from the start and great to see a local business really get behind recognising Deirdre Gogarty.”

Brian said: “this is a wonderful initiative to give recognition to a truly World Champion, I’m delighted to donate 5000 euro towards the fundraising.”

“I had the pleasure of meeting Deirdre some years ago with her Dad and her determination to succeed in a sport where women were excluded is truly remarkable” he added.
