The normally quiet beach at Bettystown was a hive of activity this morning as rescue services rushed to help a paddle boarder who had got into difficulties and was being swept out to sea.
Luckily a member of the public walking on the beach spotted the man in trouble and raised the alarm and a full scale rescue operation was launched which brought first responders racing to the scene
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport told Drogheda Life that at approximately 10:30am, the Irish Coast Guard was alerted to an incident involving one person who had gotten into difficulty while paddleboarding off the coast of Bettystown Beach, Co. Meath.
A Search and rescue operation was coordinated by the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre in Dublin.
The Dublin based Coast Guard helicopter R116, along with the Drogheda Coast Guard Unit and Skerries RNLI were also tasked to the scene.
R116 safely recovered the casualty to Bettystown Beach where he was transferred into the care of the National Ambulance Service.
It is thought that the man is none the worse for his frightening experience.
