Byrne urges public to be cautious at fenced off Tholsel and use other footpaths

With emergency repair works about to take place at the Tholsel, fencing has been erected by the contractors with scaffolding to follow in the coming days.

This has resulted in some complaints about the blocking of access for pedestrians turning from Shop St to West St or vice versa but this is an emergency closure to protect the public from risk.

Councillor James Byrne has been talking with the relevant people in Louth County Council who are asking the public to use the three other pedestrian crossings at the junction as the barrier in place comes right out to the road blocking the path completely.

“I asked the Council if there is any possibility of providing even a narrow pathway, safely, for the duration of the works as people will inevitably take a chance by walking on the road which I am concerned about” Cllr. Byrne said.

“From contacts I made with the Council over the past few days I think they get it. In fairness, they have to put public safety first and if that means closing the path completely so be it.

“I’m told the barrier out to the road and the debris netting is all a precaution, which I understand. However, they may incorporate a pedestrian throughway as works progress.

“With scaffolding to go up before works commence, which are expected to take two weeks, I would urge people to please take care in the meantime.”
