Boyne Hockey successfully hosted the annual Under 16 Leinster Indoor Tournament at Gormanston College over the weekend, with the event going ahead despite poor weather forcing the cancellation of outdoor training and matches elsewhere.

The Boyne boys were first in action, facing strong opposition from Corinthians, Pembroke, Railway Union and Bray. Despite committed performances, results did not go their way and they did not progress to the play-offs. The boys’ semi-finals saw Pembroke take on Monkstown and Portrane face Railway Union, leading to a closely contested final between Pembroke and Portrane. With a lively crowd in attendance, Portrane emerged as Cup winners. Railway Union players Cole Hogan and Zac Carroll were recognised with individual awards, with Hogan named goalie of the tournament and Carroll receiving player of the tournament honours.

Attention then turned to the girls’ competition, where Boyne entered two teams, including a younger, out-of-age squad that recently competed in the Under 14 tournament in Portrane. In a large and competitive field, both Boyne teams showed great determination and teamwork throughout the day. While results did not always reflect the effort on display, the experience proved valuable. Boyne 2 exited the competition early, while Boyne 1 progressed to the Shield play-offs.

The Shield finals featured Old Alex, Skerries 2, Avoca and Corinthians, with Old Alex claiming victory after a high-quality final. In the Cup competition, Three Rock Rovers, Portrane, Monkstown and Naas battled it out, with Monkstown narrowly overcoming Naas to lift the trophy. Individual honours went to Monkstown’s Lottie O’Reilly as Goalie of the Year and Zoe Horgan of Naas as Player of the Tournament.

The tournament showcased exciting indoor hockey and drew players from across the province. The high standard of play reflected the dedication of the players, along with the support of coaches and parents throughout the season.

Boyne Hockey is now looking ahead to announcing details of an Easter camp for members and those interested in taking up the sport.

Boyne Hockey receives grant funding from Louth County Council and Meath County Council and is supported by annual sponsorship from Irish Cement, Landy Muldoon and Hibernia Steel.
