Fine Gael Councillor Sharon Tolan Welcomes Commitment from NTA to Conduct Feasibility Study on New Bettystown Train Station
Fine Gael Councillor Sharon Tolan has today welcomed a formal commitment from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to initiate a feasibility study into the provision of a new train station for Bettystown. The announcement follows ongoing engagement and representations made by Cllr. Tolan on the urgent need to improve public transport infrastructure for the rapidly growing coastal town, and was secured at a meeting of Meath FG Cllrs with the NTA hosted by Minister Helen McEntee.
Cllr. Tolan highlighted that Bettystown and its surrounding communities have seen significant population growth in recent years, with public transport services struggling to keep pace. A new train station would provide residents with improved connectivity to employment, education, healthcare, and services, while reducing congestion and reliance on private cars. It would also relieve pressure at Laytown Train Station, which is suffering from serious capacity issues.
“This is an important step forward for Bettystown,” said Cllr. Tolan. “For too long, our residents have faced limited and overcrowded commuting options. By securing this feasibility study, we now have real momentum towards delivering a sustainable and efficient public transport solution that serves both current and future generations.”
Cllr. Tolan noted the wider benefits such a development would bring to the local economy. Increased accessibility via rail transport would make Bettystown more attractive for visitors, supporting local businesses, hospitality providers, and tourism-related enterprises.
“A train station here would not only make life easier for commuters and families, but it would also open the door to new opportunities for local businesses and services,” she said. “Bettystown has incredible amenities and natural beauty, and improving public transport links will help us welcome more visitors while supporting jobs and growth in our local economy.”
Cllr. Tolan expressed her thanks to the NTA for their engagement and acknowledged the community support that helped drive the issue forward.
“I will continue to work closely with the NTA, Meath County Council, and local stakeholders to ensure this study progresses and that the project remains a priority,” she added.
