Bettystown composer’s music to premiere at National Concert Hall

Work by a composer from Bettystown, David Ernest Mc Carthy, is to be premiered at a concert in the National Concert Hall by one of the world’s top pianists, Roman Kosyakov, alongside works by such luminaries of classical music as Mozart, Ravel and Shostakovich.

David has been playing music since his childhood and has happy memories of attending the Crilly School of Music in Fair Street from the age of nine.

A past pupil of St. Mary’s Diocesan School, David has been playing at and promoting music events for years and supplements his income by running a grind school in the Workspace Centre in Mayoralty Street where he teaches maths, physics and chemistry.

David’s work is published by Universal Edition in Vienna, which is one of the world’s oldest and best known publishing houses and he is currently promoting one of the biggest classical music concerts of the summer, in the John Field Room of the National Concert Hall, on July 2nd. and he will be having one of his own compositions performed on the night.

The concert is for solo grand piano and features a Birmingham based international concert pianist called Roman Kosyakov, who is ambassador for the Hastings piano concerto competition, which he won first prize, in 2018.

Roman, who is from Russia, came to media attention in Ireland in 2022 when the Dublin International Piano Competition (DIPC) decided to cancel the participation of all Russian artists, which provoked a media backlash.

“Some of the Russian candidates were anti-war, Roman included, and a lot of people were complaining about his treatment, with coverage in the Irish Times and even Joe Duffy at the time” David said.

“So the DIPC rescinded and let him play in the end, and he came third, and he also won the Doolan prize for the best performance of any work by Mozart in this internationally renowned Dublin competition.”

For the July 2nd concert Roman will play some very fine and accessible classical works carefully curated by David to appeal to as wide an audience as possible and still present music which is regarded as the highest quality available anywhere in the world.

On the night Roman will perform “Piano Sonata No.12” by Mozart, “Piano Sonata No.2” by Shostakovich, and “Miroirs” by Ravel.  This is in addition to the new composition from David which will receive its world premiere.
