Artists urged to apply for new Basic Income for the Arts scheme

Artists across Ireland are encouraged to apply for the newly launched Basic Income for the Arts Scheme 2026 to 2029, with applications now open.

Senator Alison Comyn said the scheme marks a significant step forward for the arts sector and represents a strong investment in Ireland’s cultural future. She said it reflects a real commitment to supporting artists, creators and cultural workers across the country.

Under the scheme, 2,000 practising artists will receive €325 per week for three years, providing greater financial stability and allowing them to focus more fully on their creative work.

Senator Alison Comyn said the support will help artists dedicate more time to creating and contributing to their communities without the ongoing pressure of financial uncertainty.

Research from previous pilot programmes found that for every €1 invested in the arts through basic income, around €1.39 is returned in wider societal benefit, underlining the value of the scheme both culturally and economically.

Who Can Apply?

The scheme is open to:

  • Practising professional artists based in the Republic of Ireland
  • Individuals aged 18 and over
  • Applicants who can demonstrate ongoing professional artistic activity

Applications are now open, the closing date is the 12th of May 2026. Successful applicants will be notified later in 2026.
