Louth County Council has announced the launch of its 2026 Gaeltacht Scholarship Scheme and is inviting applications from second level students across the county.
Following strong interest in last year’s initiative, the Council has increased the number of scholarships available for 2026. Under the scheme, 15 scholarships valued at €300 each will be awarded to Louth students attending a Gaeltacht college this year. Applications are open to students of all levels of Irish language ability.
The closing date for applications is 4.30pm on Friday, 27 February 2026.
Recipients will be selected by random draw and announced during Seachtain na Gaeilge. Successful students and their parents or guardians will be invited to a special presentation event at County Hall, where they will receive their scholarship and a Certificate of Award from the Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Seán Kelly, and the Chief Executive of Louth County Council, David Conway.
Speaking about the scheme, Cllr Seán Kelly said:
I am delighted that the Gaeltacht Scholarship Scheme is not only continuing but expanding for 2026. This initiative gives young people a wonderful opportunity to immerse themselves in the Irish language and culture. A stay in the Gaeltacht enriches their education, creates lasting memories, and helps foster a lifelong appreciation for our native language in a fun and engaging environment.
Louth County Council Chief Executive David Conway said:
We are very proud to support the 2026 scholarship scheme and to help students experience the unique learning environment of the Gaeltacht. Interest in the Irish language continues to grow across the county, and that enthusiasm is reflected in the demand for these scholarships. By supporting this initiative, we are encouraging a new generation to embrace, use, and celebrate the Irish language in their daily lives.
The 2026 Gaeltacht Scholarship Scheme is funded by Louth County Council as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting and promoting the Irish language.
