A Drogheda landmark has received a fresh burst of colour thanks to a collaborative community CSR project led by Drogheda Port Company in partnership with local mental health charity SOSAD (Save Our Sons and Daughters).
For many years, Drogheda Port Company has worked with local organisations to repaint the iconic Mall Buoy, and this year’s initiative has taken on a powerful new message — promoting mental health awareness and the life-saving work of SOSAD.
The buoy was repainted by local art teacher Sarah Mc Alevey, and her Transition Year students from St. Oliver’s Community College, who enthusiastically contributed their time and enthusiasm to the project. The paint was generously sponsored by Murtaghs of Drogheda, continuing a tradition of strong local support for community-driven projects.
“This project is more than a fresh coat of paint,” said Nessa Lally of Drogheda Port Company, “It represents the deep-rooted connection between the port and the community, and this year we are especially proud to highlight the critical mental health services provided by SOSAD.”
Carmel Murphy of SOSAD said “SOSAD Ireland are delighted to be offered this opportunity to promote our services and our freephone, helpline number. We are extremely grateful to Drogheda Port Company for allowing us to use the buoy as a canvas. While maritime buoys are used to mark hazards; they are also essential to guide and support to safety. This buoy highlighting the helpline number is a reminder that there is Mental Health support available for those in need in our town. I would like to thank artist Sarah Mc Alevey and everyone involved with this community project”.
SOSAD offers vital, free mental health support to people in Drogheda and across Ireland. Their Freephone number, 1800 901 909, is available 24/7 to anyone in crisis or in need of someone to talk to.
As it sits proudly along the quayside, the newly repainted Mall Buoy now serves as a colourful reminder of hope, compassion, and community strength.
