Witness Appeal: Fatal Road Traffic Collision, R173, The Bush, Co. Louth – 16th July 2026

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision which occurred on the R173 at The Bush, Co. Louth on Thursday, 16th July 2026.

The collision involved two cars and occurred shortly before 3.10pm.

A male driver and a female passenger, both aged in their 70s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their bodies have been removed to Louth County Hospital where post mortem examinations will take place in due course. A Garda Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the family of the deceased.

The Coroner has been notified.

The male driver of the second car, aged in his 30s, and a female passenger, also aged in her 30s, were airlifted to Beaumont Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The road has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was travelling on the R173 between Dundalk and Carlingford, Co. Louth, between 2.30pm and 3.30pm on Thursday, 16th July 2026, to come forward.

Road users who may have camera footage, including dash cam or mobile phone recordings, are asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.
