Piano concert by Tim Horton a pure joy for Drogheda Classical Music

Drogheda Classical Music welcomed the arrival of spring on Friday last with a very special performance from one of the UK’s leading pianists, Tim Horton.

Equally at home in solo and chamber repertoire, Horton is a founder member of both the renowned Leonore Piano Trio and Ensemble 360 and has been a regular guest pianist with the Nash Ensemble.

Tim performed a popular programme of Chopin works for solo piano including the great Grand Polonaise, it also included the virtuosic Kreisleriana which Schumann dedicated to Chopin.

Described recently in The Guardian as a ‘truly ferocious’ performer, Horton’s performance last Friday night was bubbling with supreme confidence and flair. His performance of Chopin’s Mazurkas after the interval, in particular, brought us on a journey of heartfelt and passionate romance and bravura which left us breathless!

The preconcert talk with Dr Gavan Ring was as illuminating as ever – one was very proud to hear of the immense influence Irish composer and pianist John Field had on the great Chopin!

Drogheda Classical Music continues its superlative series on 2 March when the Irish Baroque Orchestra comes to play one of JS Bach’s great masterpieces – The St Matthew Passion.

The closest that Bach ever got to an opera, the St Matthew Passion was composed in 1727 during Bach’s extraordinary Leipzig period, and has endured as a masterpiece of the Baroque repertoire.

This powerful and moving work will be brought to life in the beautiful surrounds of St Peter’s Church of Ireland by the Irish Baroque Orchestra and chorus, under the artistic direction of the Oliver award-winning Peter Whelan. A stellar lineup of soloists includes Irish soprano Aisling Kenny and English tenor Nick Pritchard, one of the leading Evangelists of his generation!

Tickets are €20 (€18 conc.) and booking is available at Droichead Arts Centre or online by clicking HERE

U-18 tickets (€5) and Student tickets (€10) available at the door with ID and subject to availability.
