Road Safety on the Rise: Fatalities Drop from 20 to 9 in Local Garda Division

The number of people killed on the roads in the Louth /Cavan/Monaghan Garda Division have dropped significantly.

A total of nine people lost their lives in road traffic incidents last year compared to twenty in 2023.

So far this year three people have died.

The head of the Division Chief Supt Alan McGovern welcomed the drop in deaths.

He said:”An initiative by the Roads Policing Unit in the region is having an impact.

“Last summer we launched Operation Guide in the Louth, Cavan and Monaghan. This has been a game changer for us where we were able to bring targeted enforcement, education and visibility back to the heart of road policing and it is working.

“We’ve seen a marked decline in both road fatalities and serious injury collisions locally and the message for Operation Guide was very road simple – safety is everyone’s responsibility and the results speak volumes and although one death on our roads is one too many, we had 20 fatalities on our roads on 2023.

“We launched Operation Guide in the summer of 2024- we saw a sharp decline in road deaths, we had 9 in 2024 and today in 2025 we have 3.”

Chief Supt McGovern thanked the people of the area for playing their part in reducing the number of road deaths.

He added:”They are listening to our messages, driving with care, showing respect for others and making good choices.

“We can’t be complacent either so let’s keep up the momentum by looking out for others and let’s ensure everyone gets home safely.

“Please slow down, wear your seatbelt, never drive under the influence of drink or drugs .Distractions like mobile phones can wait, your life and the lives of others are more important.”
