U2 are favorites with the bookies to headline a mega concert next summer in Slane.
Slane’s Alex Conyngham has admitted that the rock legends would be one of his top choices.
He made his comments in the Fields of Dream Podcast on Irish music with the Irish Sun newspaper.
Bono and Co have a long history with Slane having supported Thin Lizzy at the very first concert in 1981 and also headlined the venue 25 years ago for two weekends in a row during their Elevation Tour in 2001.
They also recorded the Unforgettable Fire album in Slane Castle and also band member Adam Clayton and Alex’s late dad Lord Henry Mountcharles were best friends.
Adam read one of the readings at Henry’s funeral in the village last month.
Ladbrokes bookies have U-2 at 2/1 on to headline Slane next year followed by Oasis at 4/1 and Coldplay,5/1.
Coldplay, despite gigging all over the world, have never played Slane.
Spokesman Cal Gildart said: “U2 are favourites to land in Meath once again and celebrate 25 years since their last appearance at the iconic venue. It’s been a long while since they played in Ireland and this would be a beautiful way to return.”
New Slane owner Alex told the Irish Sun that U2 tops his wishlist for next year since it is the 25th anniversary of their last appearance and they are among a number of acts he is speaking to.
He said: “Slane will always be important to U2 and U2 will always be important to Slane. Its a deep running relationship going back to the first show in 1981, and I’d love to find a way to rekindle that relationship if we could.
“We are hoping, nothing I can confirm but what I can confirm is our desire to do it.”
