First steps taken towards joint Development Plan for Drogheda

The first steps have been taken towards developing a long awaited plan for the future of the greater Drogheda area.

Up to now, neither Louth nor Meath County Council had put a joint plan in place, largely due to legal and planning complexities, particularly in east Meath, as well as changes in national planning legislation. With Drogheda split between the two counties, both councils share responsibility for its development.

It has now emerged that discussions between officials from both councils have taken place, with agreement reached to move forward with a new urban development plan for Drogheda.

The councils have also begun the process of appointing consultants to help prepare the plan.

Councillor Pio Smith said: “Following legal advice and further to discussions between the Executive of Louth and Meath County Council in relation to the preparation for an Urban Area Plan for Drogheda, I can confirm that both councils are in the process of procuring suitably qualified consultants to assist in the preparation of the Joint Urban Area Plan for Drogheda.

“The preparation of this plan will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of Section 75 of the Planning and Development Act 2024 (as amended). As the process evolves updates will be provided in due course.”

Councillor Paddy McQuillan has also welcomed the development.
