Drogheda United Looking to Bounce Back After Two Defeats

Drogheda United will look to bounce back from back to back defeats when they return to league action this weekend.

The Boynesiders go into the game following losses to Shelbourne and Sligo Rovers.

In Sligo last week, the home side took the lead in injury time at the end of the first half, with captain Will Fitzgerald on the scoresheet.

Sligo doubled their lead on 58 minutes. Alex Nolan’s free was blocked, but the ball fell back to the winger, who fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Drogheda got back into the game three minutes later after Leo Burney’s cut back was handled in the box, and Mark Doyle stepped up to score his second goal of the season, but the home side took all three points.

The first three league games between the sides last season all ended scoreless, while a 95th minute winner from Luke Turner earned Stephen Kenny’s side the three points at Sullivan & Lambe Park in August.

Scott Brady is ruled out through injury while Owen Lambe remains on the long term injury list with an ACL injury. Warren Davis, who last featured in the opening game of the season away to Galway, could be set for a return to action after injury.

Referee for the game is Rob Hennessy with assistants Dermot Broughton and Niall McLoughlin. John S. Walsh will act as fourth official.

Manager Kevin Doherty admitted the team were disappointed with last week’s display but said the focus is now on responding.

We were very disappointed with the performance last week. I’d go as far as to say it was the worst we’ve had in a couple of years.

But it is one game, and you move on from it. I was very happy with how we had started the season up until that point. Even the game against Shels that we lost, we were very good for a lot of the game but got done by a couple of set pieces.

At any stage, going to Inchicore is difficult, but given how well Pats are playing and the form they are in, with results as well as performances, it’s going to be very difficult.

We know we need to get ourselves back on track from what was a poor performance last week, and make sure we are right at it tomorrow.
