Renters in Louth urged to claim €1,000 government tax credit

Renters in County Louth have been urged to claim the €1,000 a year tax credit from the Government.

The call was made by the county’s Fine Gael TD Paula Butterly who said the scheme is worth €2,000 to a couple.

Last year 4,600 people in Louth successfully claimed the rent tax credit from the Revenue Commissioners .But so far this year 1370 renters have applied for the payment.

Deputy Butterly said: “It’s really positive to see that renters in Louth are availing of their tax credit, which is putting money back in people’s pocket. However, it’s clear many haven’t made their claim for 2025.”

The latest renters benefit data for Louth was provided by the Dept of Finance to Deputy Butterly.

She said:“I strongly encourage those eligible who haven’t claimed their rent tax credit for 2025 to do so and apply so they don’t miss out on the valuable support.”

Revenue says it does expect the numbers to rise in the coming months as most claims for credits by PAYE taxpayers take place after the year-end, and it is expected that the bulk of claims for 2025 will not be made until 2026.

The Rent Tax Credit has been available for tax years since 2022 and is worth a maximum of €1,000 euro to renters, while for jointly assessed married couples or civil partners it is worth up to €2,000.

Deputy Butterly added: “No renter should leave this money behind. The process to apply is simple and puts money back into renters’ pockets.”
