Business Owners Left Footing the Bill as Graffiti Cases Rise in Drogheda

Love Drogheda BID has condemned a recent surge in graffiti across the town, describing it as costly, damaging, and deeply disheartening for local businesses.

Over recent weeks, reports of vandalism have increased, with many business owners forced to spend their own resources on cleaning and repairs. For those with stone or permeable facades, the cost of removal is particularly high – money that could otherwise be reinvested into their businesses.

“This is not just mindless vandalism – it’s damaging the image of our town, hurting businesses, and undermining the pride that people have in Drogheda,” said Niall Kierans, former Chairperson of Love Drogheda BID. “Business owners should not be left footing the bill for this continuous destruction.”

The issue comes at a particularly disappointing time. Earlier this summer, Love Drogheda BID launched a pilot project to enhance the presentation of the town centre and support property owners in restoring building facades. While significant progress had been made, ongoing graffiti threatens to undermine those efforts.

Love Drogheda BID is now engaging with business owners to review CCTV and working closely with An Garda Síochána to explore stronger preventative measures and enforcement.

“Drogheda deserves a town centre that reflects the pride and hard work of its community and businesses,” said Nichola Kelly of Scotch Hall Shopping Centre. “We all have a role to play in ensuring our town is a welcoming, attractive, and safe place to live, work, and visit.”

The organisation has appealed directly to those responsible to stop and urged the wider community to come together in protecting Drogheda’s streetscape.
