Patricia Scanlan Urges Public to Support ‘Big Pink Breakfast’ for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Beloved Irish author and breast cancer survivor Patricia Scanlan is calling on the public to get behind the Irish Cancer Society’s Big Pink Breakfast campaign this October. The fundraiser, part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, helps to fuel groundbreaking research and free support services for patients and their families.

People across Louth and beyond are encouraged to host their own Big Pink Breakfast during October — whether it’s a coffee morning at work, a family gathering at home, or a community bake sale.

Every year, around 3,600 women and approximately 30 men in Ireland are diagnosed with breast cancer. Patricia herself received her diagnosis in December 2024 after a BreastCheck appointment.

Speaking at the launch, she said:
“Before cancer visited me, I knew how much the Irish Cancer Society supported people in need. Never, though, did I think I would need their services. Like most people, I thought cancer would never affect me. After my initial shock and terror, I was greatly helped by the kindness of all the medical staff and the support services available. The Irish Cancer Society is like a beacon of light on a dark night — from counselling and transport services to financial advice and vital research, they are there when people need them most. But all of this requires funding. That’s why I’m asking people to host a Big Pink Breakfast and support this incredible organisation.”

The Irish Cancer Society receives just 5% of its funding from Government, with the majority coming from public donations. Last year alone, public support:

  • Provided more than 5,150 lifts to treatment for breast cancer patients.
  • Delivered over 380 nights of end-of-life care through the Night Nursing Service.
  • Supported people with more than 5,350 comforting conversations via the Support Line and Daffodil Centres.
  • Funded over 5,300 free counselling sessions for patients and families.
