Drogheda to get public vaccination centre at DIFE

It’s been a bone of contention that people from Drogheda and South Louth must travel to Dundalk for their Covid jab and there was disappointment last week when it was anounced that the vaccination centre at the gymnasium at DIFE was not intended as a mass vaccination facility for the general public.

But today the HSE has confirmed that vaccinations for members of the public are scheduled to commence at DIFE later this week.

The news came in a letter to Deputy Ged Nash who had asked the Minister for Health for clarification on the matter and to sate if the HSE is actively identifying potential sites in Drogheda, for a second Covid-19 vaccination centre in County Louth.

Welcoming the commitment Deputy Nash said:

“Drogheda was initially left off the government list in February and I have worked hard since to have a community vaccination centre opened in our town to serve South Louth and East Meath.

“The HSE has confirmed to me today that DIFE will now be used, from later this week, to vaccinate members of the public who register through the online portal. This is great news for the area and represents real progress.”

In a letter to Deputy Nash the Chief Officer of the HSE’s Midlands Louth Meath Community Health Organisation, Des O’Flynn, said:

“Plans are at an advanced stage with the help of our colleagues in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital to commence administering vaccines to members of the Public registered on the portal in Drogheda Institute of Further Education (DIFE).

“We expect to start later this week subject to staffing levels and vaccine supply.”
